Why Joker is a Modern Classic! (A character analysis)

5 stars

22 Aug 2024

There is no other iconic superhero as Batman but what's a purpose of a hero without a villain, as they say. Joker is without a doubt the most iconic DC villain to be created. So Joker is a movie that I've never seen before, until now and what do I think of it? I thought it was amazing, thanks for watching - but for real its an amazing movie that is touch on pop culture and I would highly recommended it to watch it and come back here because like every review I made it contains spoilers and there's your tag line.

In this review I'm really taking about Joker's character so not really the plot by any means but its a discussion on Todd Phillips portrayal of the character. So just name other things I like the movie first very quickly:

Amazing Cinematography: This movie surprisingly have lots of colours and done in a subtle way. Like Joker is tracking Sophie with the blue colours for example. I love that the movie have very far away shots and it makes the more dramatic moments feel more real.

The Aesthetic: I love that this movie don't used a lot of CGI and I really appreciated it! It gives more quality and feel like Gotham is a real place. I love the movie sprinkle in the 60s vibe, not as like showing 60s product placements or any means but utilize the time.

The Score: It fantastic, its really beautiful with the uses of violins and making it sad. It also builds attention up like revel happens or something.

The Script: The script is really good, it doesn't say generic or basic lines and the movie is subtle at points (which I'll get to later about the lines of the movie) like they don't tell you every thing on Joker's joke book like that scene where he gives the card to the lady and said : " Forgive my laughter :I have a Condition. It's a medical condition causing sudden, frequent uncontrollable laughter that doesn't match how you feel. It can happen in people with a brain injury or certain neurological conditions. Thank You!"

They did in a subtle way and its a brilliant move because the movie used this (secret) formula : show don't tell. Its a great way to get your audiences invested in your story while still taking. Compare to the Dark Knight trilogy well yeah its great don't get me wrong but however I do feel like Christopher Nolan gives too much dialogue. There's nothing wrong its that its kind of spells out the movie, don't you think?

So anyways without a further-a-do let's get into it:

Skip this statement because its really about the basics of Joker's first appearance. In case if one person doesn't know who is he is:

He first appear in Batman #1 in April 25, 1940 by Bill Finger. Right of he's first introduction he is injecting people with venom that forced them to smile and take their own life. He injected to make them insane of anxiety before dying. He impersonates a police officer in the creepiest way imaginable, tried to burn Robin and Batman alive and even when he's caught he'll still smile because he doesn't care and he's gonna get out anyways. Joker's first issue nailed him, as an threaten and very interesting antagonist and perfectly sets he's character up. Who knows what joke he makes because the joke will ended up to you.

He actually doesn't appear a lot of issue of the original Batman series, he pop up now and then. But I believe that Joker catch in revenant pop culture is the movies from Adam West, to Tim Burton, to Christopher Nolan and now Todd Philips.

Thought the idea of this film of making Joker relatable instead of the mysterious nature as he is I think the idea came from the legendary comic writer Alan Moore's Graphic Novel The Killin Joke. Its a Joker and I would recommend reading it with fantastic art by Brain Bolland. Its a story about we learn of he's tragic past before injecting him with venom he told that he's mother is abusive, he wants to play as an comedian but never get a chance and has a pregnant wife who sadly died. The mean guys plays a joke of making wear a red helmet and cape to look like a superhero and then Batman came but mistake him as Red Hood and fall to this chemical turning he's skin pale white and he's hair green and started laughing in a creepy way.

After Batman defeat him he offer to help him but rejected it because every thing he sees is a joke to him. The ending shows he and even Batman laughs together. The main idea of this comic explored is one bad day can ruins some one's life.

The actual review:

Any ways! Back what you came here for! So to start off, its a two hour long movie, on paper its sounds bad because you are just watching Joker messing but when you actually look a bit more deeper it actual has a meaning behind it of you're paying attention. The one thing that the movie shows you is that he's a talent person, the movie spends time on he's character flaw, frustration and passion.

To start he's flaw he is mentally insane, the movie spends time on who is the rightful parent of him and discovers that Thomas Wayne is not he's father because he's mother says something about him and after he soon realised he's own mother is abusive and he was an orphan all a long. No mom or dad. Just alone boy. There are moments that he wants to end himself because he might think this world is a joke to him. I think this movie perfectly shows what happen when someone is not well cared or look after.

He's frustration, I think its more believable to show he's problems to what he thinks is wrong in society in Gotham and he's kinda right, also he said this line : "If it was me dying on the sidewalk, you'd walk right over me."

This line makes the Joker more engaging and relatable because the movie speak to the heart. Also Joaquin Phoenix wasn't acting when he delivered the single most personal line in movies I've ever seen because its a real life reference of he's passing of he's brother River Phoenix (age 23) after a drug overdose in front on the side walk during he's time on Hollywood Nightclub. The one thing I adore from this movie is the idea of : Man Vs. Society. It challenges the viewer that society is unforgivable, its cruel , mean and ruthless. We all like to fetishes these massacres while completely ignoring our journey in life. Its like another similar movie that came out the same year, John Wrick 3 which kills over one hundred people but he's shots are never as powerful , strong and emotional as the Joker shots one bullet to Murray Franklin. We love to watch him killing people not because he did just for the sake of it, its because he question our molarity and reality to our perspective to our world views. He shows the true ugliness of humanity, I think that's why Joker is so... human and profound because he's linked to our world and our lives.

The one thing I adore of he's character is he's love of music, I adore that aspect because he gives him a passion and its really interesting what are bad people very passionate of something and that's us humans, no matter if it sucks a$$ there's always this passion going by. Its done very subtlety and its a setup to the sequel that is coming out this year (hey, I guess that's why I watch this in the first place).

Of course the movie isn't trying to make propaganda because of the controversial of being "too violence", guys this movie is a work of art! That's the thing, art is very emotional and there's no excusing it!

Final Thoughts: So overall, Joker is a fantastic experience! This movie made a billion in the box office and oh boy did it deserves it! This shows if you put work ,love and care for a movie, it pays off! The movie makes a bold, genius move of showing our world in the bad way and this movie might have been this best Joker storyline of all time, no really, its THAT good in my opinion. Its not about Arthur coming up with a an evil convenient plan to take over the world or fight Batman (because this movie is taking when Bruce is young and he's parents get killed and I'm interested what is Phillip is going to do with Batman, maybe vengeance, who knows and that's what I'm a bit excited for).

Its better then Christopher Nolan's take on him but to be far Heath Ledger is the single greatest villain cast of all time along side Joaquin Phoenix and I can't really decided which is better the two are amazing at the same level of performances, in fact I almost forgot one more time about he's performance. I love that he gives more of depressed side of Joker making him feel sad and angry.

So be careful who you call the bad guy because you ended up feeling sympathy for the villain.

So that's everything I got to say!
