Simply put, I like this film and I love this film series.
This series played a core part of when I was a child; my father, when I was very young and barely had a clue what was going on, read the first book to me by my bedside.
Specifically on the first film: the story is well written, the animation was astounding - the flying scenes being a highlight - and the score is masterful. Though my name for the film would’ve been: How to capture (and disable) your murder lizard cat from Hell! A part of me is concerned about Hiccup and Toothless’ dynamic, Toothless literally being dependent on Hiccup to fly. It’s like if I haphazardly threw dynamite in the air and your legs blew up and then I made you robot legs that I can control remotely.
Sure Toothless ends up liking that he is at the whims of a 14 year old boy, but I feel I should bring up the subtle problem of their relationship.
Overall, I’d say it’s a lovely film and I’ll most definitely recommend it to anyone interested.
