So How to Train Your Dragon.
It's a film series that spawn in 3 movies and based on a book series with the same name.
I do remember watching it but not really my favourite upon re-valuing I come to apperciate this more way more then I thought it would be.
I also do remember having a dvd copy at my gand parents house but it isn't working any more. Without a further-a-do let's get into it:
Book to the big screen: Upon reading a small part of it, I haven't fully read the first book but before I start talking about the film, the Dreamworks logo has Toothless in it, it's those blink and you miss it momments. This just tells you the amount of thought and care for this movie.
Animation: Upon re-watching it, I never fully realised how spotless the animation actually is.
There are moments of the film when you pause it, it feels its from a painting and not to mention the highly detailed texture like the close up shot at Toothless's eye. They didn't need to go the extra mile but they did. The scene of the clouds of it's beautiful colours gives me chills every time I saw this.
The lighting is so well ulitize, the shadows and the way they add on the last minor details.
I also love the world building, the movie opens to Berk as Hiccup (being the narrator) about of his region having dragons. LIke the way the camera moves and shots gives us a good visual idea what kind of place Berk is. A viking terrtory. But they also have the other characters in the background to move like when the random background characters look back at Hiccup because he is getting more attention of "defeating" dragons or the intereacts to the other dragons. They even add on there's an outer world with a bunch of forests, mountains and even smaller islands, little details background designs really makes Berk feel so much more alive.
Like you can go to there, its truly magical.
I adore all the dragon designs, all of them are so well design and they all feel like seprate, powerful individuals that roam around and take off. Simliar to the qualities to Pokemon, the movie emphasis that dragons are just like people but with unnatural powers.
For example: I adore the Kauji dragon, it's intense and you can feel the terror to it.
Hiccup: Now our main protagonist, it's written as a underdog story as they are going for as Chris Sanders (the writer) is going for the 18 year old on their young adult trainning. So what makes Hiccup such a relatable character? That's because we relate to he's struggles of becoming more of what he is and not become of a shell of ourselves but also wanted to have that recognition to proceed others nto think we are cool.
Deep down we all feel like Hiccup at one point, we try to change so others an accept you of who you are but it ended up fallin a part because it dilute and worse of all contradict our morals. Hiccup says he wants to be a viking by killing a dragon, but when he saw toothless. He could have killed the most mysterious dragon, he could been the greatest viking of 300 years, but he didn't.
It's not who he is, he has the ability of humanity. He is able to think differently of using tools rather then relying he's strength. He also talk out before he had the fight and at future films he dosen't actually fight first, he talks to them first. It's even more impressive because he is born in a Norway like place with viking aka people who raids often and yet he is better then all of them because his mind is he's strength. It teach us that you don't have fit in others to be amazing.
It's a brillaint setup of being the weak coward to pay off the climax of being a strong, brave and smart viking with his mind skills.
I should also slightly mention the performances because all of them are brilliant, not once I found a character annoying or gets on my nerves. When I hear the character, I don't hear the actor/actress, I hear Hiccup, Astrid, Stoick , Valka and etc. They caried the whole movie and all the side characters are really charaming and so memorable.
Toothless: I competely forgot how will uilitze Toothless is. I love the idea that he is a black dragon with features that a bat would have but also having behaviours like a cat would have. It's a really nice blend of cute and fearsome which makes a really appealing design again like the appeal to Pokemon.
I mean you can make Toothless cute and cuddly but also an absolute meance but without making him too out of character.
He's also a character you can feel the emtion, what I meant was if you look in a different angle you see different expersions without opening his mouth. I mean he is just adorable in the scene where Hiccup put his hand on Toothless, symbolize he's trust, I don't know it's such a powerful and heart warming momment. I also think it's really cleaver that he and Hiccup have the same parallels but with different personas. It adance the film of making the audience attact closer to the character and route them at the end. Same ith the other dragons with thier personality and colour palette.
I want to talk about Stoick and why I love he's character, other then he's iconic lines: "Odin, it was rough. I almost give up on you."
At some point, our parents do have high expectations because it's the point of time to seek that full potential it's that Stoick other then the lost of he's love wife also taught he's generations and was always obligated that dragons are always blood voilent beasts. He is so focus on he's strenght and he's power he once dub Hiccup the worst viking but after he believe seeing the other trainers on the dragons. He says sorry and proud of him to call his son is such a heart-wrenching momment and I think he is a well written father character.
The score: Of course and not least. The music, John Powell is out standing. He's score is what makes this movie so iconic and every score he makes is a banger after a banger. All of them conveys all emtions and executed perfectly. The Test Dive and Romantic Flight are timeless musical masterpieces.
Closing Thoughts: How to Train your Dragon is incredible, I love everything about this movie. The amount of passion is thriving and even look further with the documentary behind the scenes of how they setup during production. It's one of these wonderful films that if you make anything in piece of media like if it's comic books, songs, novels and etc. As long you put heart into it, nothing can go wrong.
This movie is truly special.
So that's everything I got to say!
