Illumination has a thing for making serviceable films. Not necessarily Great (with a CAPITAL G) films, just "good" films that don't make you wanna rip out your eyes. They don't take risks is what I mean, they do what is safe, what they know will be at least profitable if not good. Now I got this friend, he even reviewed this film, I don't know if he'll have the same views of Illumination that I have, in fact, from the 2 reviews I saw relating too this studio he LOATHED both (The Minions and The Grinch, and he gave them the dreaded... 2 stars! I have a rant at the end to keep the pacing why 2 stars are bad) but I don't think he made any mention what I think.
This may get me stoned, but I have neither read the original book or seen the first movie adaption, but I have seen the Jim Carrey film. I don't know what that gains me, or makes me lose in writing this review, but I feel it's relevant to say here and now.
I liked how they did the Grinches social anxiety, in an early scene when the Grinch has to go down to Whoville to get stuff, we see an army of choir singers attack him with God Rest ye Gentleman. While funny, it shows his anxiety when dealing with the Whos of Whoville.
This friend I mentioned, Illumination's worst enemy I'll call him, said this film was one of his guilty pleasures. Now I know I gave it 4 stars, but in the end, this film didn't matter to me that much. I wouldn't mind watching it again, but if I had a choice, there's always a Christmas Carol (speaking of, I've been meaning to read it ever since a friend- I'll call him Klaus- gave it to me).
And this is the rant I mentioned. For a writer (like me), 2 stars is a pretty bad sign. With a 1-star, at least there's no real hope to making the story any better, all you can do is do better next time. But with 2 stars, it's like saying there's something good here, but the writers weren't skilled enough to figure it out.
