Nine year-old Abel hasn't spoken in the three years since his father left the family home. After leaving hospital his speech suddenly returns, but Abel now believes he is the head of the household — husband to his mother and authoritarian father to his two siblings. Relieved to have any communication at all, the family cautiously play along, until Abel's real father decides to return. A charming, confident debut from Mexican star Diego Luna, this tender satirical fable deals insightfully with patriarchy and single parenthood, but what really stands out are the outstanding performances that Luna (a former child actor himself) generates from his young lead actors.
Contains strong language, themes of self harm and moderate sex references.
