Adam is a high-school senior whose father has left the family whilst his mother has found a new partner, Paul, who Adam isn’t particularly keen on. To distract himself from the undiagnosed visions he sometimes experiences, Adam takes up cooking and becomes so good at it that he dreams of becoming a chef after graduating. After an incident in chemistry class in which his visions cause him to accidentally burn his lab partner, Adam is diagnosed as schizophrenic. When the whole school finds out, Adam is bullied, leading him to transfer to a Catholic school. There he meets a seemingly perfect student called Maya who agrees to tutor him, and although romantic feelings develop between the two, Adam is keen that neither she, nor anyone else, finds out about his condition. ‘Words on Bathroom Walls’ is adapted from a popular young adult novel and sensitively explores teenage mental health while retaining an emotional impact.
mental illness theme, moderate sex references, infrequent strong language
