Based on a novel of the same name, this animation is set in late-90s Kabul, shortly after the Taliban have come to power. The daily violence and injustice are seen through the eyes of two couples– Zunaira and Mohsen, a young couple madly in love, and the older prison Warden Atiq and his terminally-ill wife Mussarat who seem to have already faltered under the Taliban’s oppression. Their lives become intertwined when a senseless and heartbreaking event takes place between Zunaira and Mohsen. This beautiful watercolour animation takes an often brutal look at how war and oppression effect intimate relationships and depicts some of the actions taken by the Taliban at the time.
