‘Caramel‘ is a romantic comedy featuring the talents of Nadine Labaki, Yasmine Al Masri, Joanna Moukarzel, Gisèle Aouad, Sihame Haddad with Aziza Semaan. The film was also directed by Nadine Labaki too. The film itself revolves around the lives of five Lebanese women: Layale (portrayed by Nadine Labaki), Nistrine (portrayed by Yasmine Al Masri), Rima (portrayed by Joanna Moukarzel), Jamal (portrayed by Gisèle Aouad) and Rose (portrayed by Sihame Haddad). The characters in the film have their own personalities which relate to their own problems which they overcome or realise in a manner only the audience can distinguish. The film was in Arabic and French with English subtitles and I found that this added a certain amount of texture and culture to the film as well as romance surrounding the language’s history. The acting was convincing and the comedic timing was genius and the chemistry between Sihame Haddad with Aziza Semaan is one to be praised with their emotional dialogue and comedy too which added texture to the story and their characters. The scenery was exquisite and beautiful, the lighting added just the right touch to the scenes whether it was sorrowful or a joyride. The dialogue is witty yet amusing and hides emotions behind the voice which expresses how in character the actor/actress is during the scene and throughout the entire film. Overall I think that this film is touching yet hilarious to the end.
