Arguably Gus Van Sant's best film, My Own Private Idaho is the director's personal vision of homosexuality and alienated youth; with stellar performances from Keanu Reeves and the late River Phoenix. Being an independent film, the film experiments with different forms of art and performance in ways that Hollywood blockbusters don't, making it a refreshing piece of cinema for anyone who's bored of the predictable narratives and conventions that have surrounded Hollywood for the last 20 years.
