If I could, I would be reviewing John Carpenters version of The Thing, but it isn't on this website and I think that people are bored of reading reviews for it. I mean come on, we all know it's a horror classic. So why not take a look into the first film adaption of the novella 'Who Goes There?" directed by Christian Nyby, where a team of scientists are stranded in a cold arctic environment after discovering some sort of crashed alien spaceship; which has an evil, blood thirsty creature hiding inside of it! I'm going to cut straight to the point, so here are the things I liked. First of all. the writing in this movie is genious. I'm sure it was one of the first movies to ever have overlapping dialogue, which doesn't sound like much, but believe me, it is. The dialogue is very organic, natural and realistic, whereas a film like "The Mist" (which isn't bad by the way, I just have a bone to pick with it) has only main characters speaking in a store filled with tons of people. Also, this movie has a very appealing aesthetic to it. There are beautiful shots of glaciers and the attention to detail indoors is pleasing to the eye. The last big thing that I really enjoyed about this movie was the score. The score is very effective at making scenes just that tiny bit more enjoyable and it has a whole range of emotions. So now onto one thing I didn't like quite as much. It's no big deal, but when the monster is revealed it is a bit of a let down. In my opinion he looks a bit too hokey, which is expected of the time I guess, but how is it that Godzilla's debut 3 years later would be memorable and not embarrassing to look at. Until the monsters reveal, when you are only shown his trail of destruction and silhouettes of him, it is great. Though it is satisfying to see the monster take on loads of scientists while engulfed in flames. Well that was my first review on this website, so I'm sorry if it was a bit sloppy, I'll make sure to improve next time. Thanks for reading!
