Signs (2002)

Let me just start by saying I like M. Nigh Shyamalan, I believe he is a great director who has made great films, although his career has dipped down in the past 6 years, he still remains one of my favorite film makers of all time.

So when siting down to watch this film i had lots of good exceptions, I had heard some thing about the ending (I will come to that later) but i was going to view the film without any knowledge of it. And if i had to be honest i was super impressed.

The film follows the story of a priest turned farmer (Mel Gibson) who lives with his two children (Rory Culkin & Abigail Breslin) and his ex-baseball player brother (Joaquin Phoenix). The film tracks there life when huge crop circles begin popping up all round the world including in there back yard. The family begin to watch in paranoia as there whole world turn insane. All while the farmer is battling with his faith.

Suspense is the driving force for this terrifying film, but don't expect jump scares or even much horror, prepare your self for terror as the family watch in terror. This is not a film for everyone, as it has a slow narrative and to be honest not much goes on, but that is why the film works, as it drains every last bit of tension from you, before pilling on the scares in the last 20 minutes. The film is a true work of genius, never before, well since Hitchcock, has suspense and dread been handled as well as this.
