Stan and Ollie has come at a popular time for biopics, arriving shortly after the raging success of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and in the midst of the stiring anticipation of 'Rocket Man'. Though the story of, beloved comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy isnt as cinematically grand as those of Freddie Mercury or Elton John, this biopic captures this little known story in the definate right ways. Witness an enlightening set of performances as Steve Coogan (as Stan Laurel) finds a part worthy of his talent - particularly in his mannerisms - and John C Rielly (as Olliver Hardy) reminds us that he can strive in non comedic roles. Though Stan and Ollie primarily focuses on on the off stage side of Laurel and Hardy's career and relationship; the film does not fail to perfectly recreate some of the duo's best comedic material. It offers us a glimpse at some of the strongest roots and history of the world wide comedy we all love today, as well as show what the two sacraficed and put on the line to be the worlds jesters. The film provides a musical score full of classical elements and vibes fitting to the set era and and overall feel of the film. Athough, in general, the film doesnt have that much special with the camewra work or editing; the repeated use of the mid shot from behind of Laurel and Hardy becomes as iconic throughout the film as the two did throughout the world, and captures it just as well. The film goes at an easy to follow and well done pace starting with a quick introduction to the characters in the midst of their career and sets up the film in a simple way before making a sixteen year time jump, to the pairs final tour, early on in the film.
Stan and Ollie is a fun and informative call back to some of comedies finest and I definitey recommend it - especially to those who enjoy theatrical history and culture
