Best film of the year- Truly a Masterpiece for Cinema!!

5 stars

20 Dec 2019

This film for me is fantastic. I don't think there is a single flaw in this movie, everything from the acting, to the directing, to the cinematography and editing, this film ticks off all the boxes. The plot follows a character called Arthur Fleck where the story takes us through his life journey and how he turns into the notorious villain- Joker. This film has a great sense of suspense, tension and dread. It really depicts how society can tear people apart. The film's message basically says that we created Joker, which shows how badly we can mistreat people, so if we just be nicer to everyone, we can prevent the next Joker.

I am now going to talk about the filmmaking in general, which I think is outstanding. The use of dark colours (Black, Brown, etc) really gives off the impression how gruesome and dirty Gotham can be. The use of music in this film really heightens the tension, the score really sells the transformation of the Joker, especially in the final 30 minutes. Also, the use of 70s music really makes the film feel like it was made in the 70s which was the intention. The Mise-En-Scene is great, everything from Gotham's streets, to the design of buildings, to the costumes really builds the atmosphere of Gotham. Now I have to talk about the Acting- Joaquin Phoenix is truly Oscar Worthy in this film. His performance really transforms acting to a new level and it captures the Joker with brilliance. Everyone else in the film does a really good job of portraying their character's and how they cross paths with Arthur.

The editing in this film is also truly unique. The way that scenes are cut together really sell the the events portrayed on the screen and sometimes when the film dosen't cut away, it can be truly breathtaking to watch. The camera work in this film is also excellent. Everything from the long takes, to the interesting angles and chilling close ups really gives an impression that stays- Not one shot feels out of place. The lighting also in this film really sells the look of Gotham and adds to the suspense and tension. The use of low key lighting, Backlight and natural lighting is truly a work of art. It really does add to the dread, especially in the talk show scene, and especially in the past 10 minutes.

Overall, I personally believe that this film will be a classic in years to come. Even though the events that are depicted have shown controversy, I think it will gain a cult following. Everything portrayed in this film works so well and I hope that it gets some awards at the Oscars, especially for Best Actor and Cinematography. Definitely check this film out, you will not regret it!!
