Firstly, the framing device is completly unesesary. It doesn't make you view the animated storylines any differently, and the animated storylines don't affect the real life storylines. There was a limp attempt to connect the two worlds, like Lleu finding out he's adopted, and the animated world helping him accept that, but there's no actual reason why he accepts that other than the fact that his otherworld characted is adopted. If the film kept dipping in and out of the animated world during the film, the parralels they were trying to create could have been more clear and in depth. It doesn't matter that entering the world through the water is based on folklore, as it is utterly useless when looking at the film by itself. This begs the question, why wasn't the entire film just animated. And oh, the animation... The animation in this film is awful. The ways character's bodies move is unatural, the blend of different forms of media just doesn't work, and it all looks just pretty unapealling in general. My last grievance with this films is it's treatment of women. Every storyline finds a way to be cruel to women and make it her fault or punish her for being upset. You can argue that it was a different time when this folklore was written, but then why make the film in the first place if you know its content is so problematic? Without this issue, I'd say the film is so bad that it's good, but I really can't with the discomfort I felt while watching the film as a woman.
