Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

A film review by Angeline L

Have you ever had a bad day? No matter how terrible, it can’t have been as bad as the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day that Alexander and his family go through! Everything that can possibly go wrong does, yet in a very comic way. It’s based on a book of the same title, but the movie was quite different. I think it was aimed at kids, but adults can enjoy it too. I found it entertaining, but it wasn’t really my style. It was nice because it managed the task of being a comedy, but still believable. Alexander has a terrible day (popularity problems, small fire, etc.) while all his family enjoy their dreams coming true (new job, promotion, prom, etc.) but, alas, the next day, the tables have turned!

Alexander was a character that all will love as you could relate to him. The plot was brilliant, with some unexpected laughs. It was certainly very creative, from the sister drinking too much cough syrup and going crazy before her big play, to the brother almost losing his girlfriend due to a misunderstanding on the phone. For me, a big improvement would be to add more funny scenes. Also, the trailer spoils it by putting in most of the best bits so maybe give the trailer a miss.

I enjoyed this film, there were bittersweet moments mixed with pure comedy gold. There was an unexpected ending which nearly had me in tears, it was so sweet! Some big stars were actors in this film, although I wasn’t familiar with most of them. The whole family will love it and it has the makings of a Disney classic!
