An Inspector Calls An Inspector Calls, originally written by J.B. Priestly then turned into a film and produced by A.D. Peters in 1954, is a gripping film about the capitalist society we live in and how cruel it is to lower social classes. Originally set in 1912, this film starts with Inspector Goole entering the home of an upper-class family (the Birling family) unannounced. The family had just been celebrating the engagement of daughter, Sheila to a man named Gerald Croft. This pair would soon become two especially important characters. Mr Goole begins to then tell the family a young woman by the name of Eva Smith had just passed away, we later find out that every single member had come across Eva before, and each ruined her life in one way or more. This film will make you reflect on yourself both mentally and psychically. It is a perfectly produced film, made to engross you, and force you to keep on watching. The cinematography, story and acting cannot be faulted in this period drama. Whatever your ideas or conspiracies may be whilst watching this film, I would advise you to always expect the unexpected. The scripts that had been written for this were done to absolute perfection as they are always strong, commanding and thought provoking. The psychological elements to this film make it so much better, it gives it a complexity you never know you needed whilst never making it difficult to understand. The elements help to make the characters more enticing, showing us their flaws without making us hate them too much. My overall rating on this film is 5/5, this is one of the best films I have ever watched, and I am sure I will rewatch again soon because it is so gripping and strategically produced.
