At the end of World War Two, 10-year-old Johannes "Jojo" Betzler and his mother Rosie are residing in Nazi Germany. Jojo's older sister recently passed away from influenza, and he has lost contact with both of them. His closest confidante is an imagined friend who is a fictionalised version of Adolf Hitler. A Jewish teen girl named Elsa is found hiding in Jojo's home one day, and he threatens to denounce her to the Gestapo. Jojo agrees to keep it a secret after Elsa threatens to kill his mother if he doesn't assist keep her safe. Jojo gradually starts to doubt everything about his Hitler Youth indoctrination as the end of the war approaches.
