Looper: Is it worth your time?

3 stars

08 Jun 2023

This sci-fi film directed by Rian Johnson is fast paced and well made with themes of time-travel, love and crime. Rian Johnson was born in Maryland on December the 17th, 1973 and has directed several other films including Star Wars: Episode VIII- The Last Jedi, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Knives out, Glass Onion and The Brothers Bloom as well as the TV series Poker Face.

In this high tension race against time a young woman played by Emily Blunt and a young man played by Joseph Gorden-Levitt attempts to stop a person close to home played by Bruce Willis making a life altering decision that could ultimately change the course of history.

In this film there are a variety of good things. Among these are memorable characters, high tension plot twists, blood, guts and gore as well as fast action scenes that are easy to follow even if you are not used to doing so.

This film, Looper, could contain many messages, however the most prominent of these would be the motivational message of we make our own decisions, and thereby make our own future in an attempt to boost the morale of those who are struggling with life for any reason, ranging from addiction, to losing a loved one, or suffering from an illness such as Cancer or Parkinsons. A close follow up could be the message of Love is Timeless to help people who are in love have the confidence to show it. There are a few of Johnson’s usual touches in here such as the use of mafia and crime and a character battling an illness or an addiction.

However there are also some bad things as well. These include vague backstories for characters, unrelatable characters and confusing scenes and bad scene placement including some of the flashbacks and flash forward for the main characters.

Personally, I enjoyed the film at the time as it was amazing, however, when looking back on it, it wasn't anywhere near as good as I thought it was. This film may be worth the time when you watch it, but you may regret it later on but if you like sci-fi films that have obscure plot twists at every corner, fast paced films with a sad ending, or even action films that contain hopeless romance, then this film is perfect for you. However, I would not advise spending money on it as it would be a waste and you could just as easily spend that money on a cinema trip to see any number of new films. On top of this, if you prefer slow movies, movies that have happy endings that are not anticlimactic, or films that challenge your brain, then this is not the film for you.

In conclusion, this is a long way from the best film ever, however it is by no means the worst, because although it has its flaws, it is an ok movie that ,I can say with a fair amount of confidence, is a good way to pass the time.
