On paper it sounds great... a character tangled in a deal he can't undo, a villain that questions human nature. Suspense that builds and builds.
What's not to love?
The answer: the execution.
Hitchcock directs this movie with a certain gravitas, he builds up the plot to be this masterful unfolding of events that continually brings into question what the viewer thinks a human is capable of. However, the answer to these phycological question is hidden behind a hazy veil of tired dialogue, long and unyielding; a marathon of similar boring sets and basic editing that leaves much to be desired.
The age of this movie has taken its toll and the so called "master" of suspense that people love to insist on, now seems to be unmeaningful - mediocre at a stretch.
So, no matter of the masterful plot, or clever storyline. If the execution is lacklustre - it means little to the viewer.
