I found that Robin Williams was a marvel in the film, delivering a light-hearted pizzazz to the film (this is Robin Williams after all), and when the story wanted, a more serious one, much like the rest of the cast.
And when the story wants to be sad, it makes you feel sad! Delivering a story of how being a bad parent ruins lives. And carpe diem and what not.
A little fun fact for you, Robin Williams would later reference this in Mrs Doubtfire by saying "carpe dentum; seize the teeth." This is actually a mistranslation, carpe dentum is a real Latin phrase you can actually say but it actually means pick a tooth, not seize the teeth.
