Monkey funny.
So King Kong, you who he is, I know who he is (duh, I've already covered Skull Island).
This is the first time I watch the very first one surprisingly. So after watching it, what I think?
It's enjoyable and don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect to Kong as much as, if not equal to Godzilla of its influential special effects novelty. However I think its not fine art as many people acclaimed to be.
Yes, its a bit overrated and without a further-a-do lets go into Skull Island:
The good :
The Animation: I know there are people (like Leonard) how just thought and said :"Um, is it outdated, well actually?"
Then my friend, your jumping into conclusions that people tend to do (for flip sake the majority of everyone here did the same).
This movie fascinated me, the fact that THIS was the special effects was before the invention of CGI. That happens to be models for stop motion and the fake human rag dolls. But you had to keep in mind that this movie was made during the Great Depression in America in the 30s.
Speaking of interesting aspects, the dinosaurs is very different to say the least as we usually interpretated. The Brachiosaurus (I think) is a very good swimmer and eats humans. The T-Rex has a very different sound that is more comparable to a jaguar. It gives this more mystrious vibe to it of prehistoric animals.
The interesting part for me is that again this movie evolutionary.
Can you feel it Leonard?
Leonard: "Yeah."
ITS EVOLUTION!
This is probably the oldest movie i've ever seen, even older then Snow White (1937)! I don't know, again (I said again twice) its still mind blowing that what the material they used and to be fair it (unintentionally) gives charm (reason why I said that is because its not really supposed to charm the audiecene but still).
I also like the setup of Skull Island, being that the tribes believe Kong is there god, showing there is human there. Just in case, yes there are a few questionable stuff like why did Jack said "Monstrous, all-powerfull, still living has a basis of thruth. I'll tell there's something that island that no white man ever seen".
Yes, he said white man but I forgive it because it doesn't mock people with skin- (Oh my god, apology my loyal viewers).
The issues I had :
Me and my Monkey: Okay its both Kong and Ann is my main problem (Beauty and the Beast, ironically).
Ann is kinda annoying and the worst version of her. Her whole character is the damsel-in-distress, now I'm not a woke weirdo who thinks every character should be Captain Marvel and men are evil people. But come on and I do feel like the she just joins in because plot need to happen. Also she would not shut the frick up when she's screaming all the time.
For Kong, I like he is presented and I get he is this tragic character but the way the writers makes it a bit mis-guided. Let me explain.
I like he is presented its that the actions what I'll dare to say, the most less likable version. For most of the other versions, yes he kills people but at least when he is provoke and sees the danger. Here, he is killing people on purpose and that grin makes him more insane.
What makes him more unlikable the cherry on top is the way he treated Ann. The scene that gets me is when he is undressing her on purpose and only is interested of her. Not by heart by looks and simplying "monkeying around her" is he's motivation the point where why does Ann care Kong so much considering he played around her dress without consent (joke intended).
The pacing is actually bad: What to my other disapointment is the pacing. So the fight of Kong to a dinosaur not once, not twice but THREE times (three ,the not so magical number). I want to bring this up because these hindered the character developement of Kong and Ann bond.
I dare to say this is filler that has nothing going to the plot.
Final Thoughts: So that was King Kong, is it Cinematic Classic Junk? Absolutely Not!
Its an iconic movie that is a head of its time and a novelty of old Hollywood.
But I can't say its a masterpiece and the problems I had water down the movie for me but reguardless, I did enjoy it by the way and I would recommended this movie to give it an watch.
So that's EVERYTHING I got to say!
