ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S PSHYCO REVIEW
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) is a groundbreaking classic that has shaped the inspiration on the horror, thriller, and other genres to this day.
The storyline is focused on the disturbing events at the Bates Motel and the psychological unraveling of its proprietor Norman Bates. The way the storyline is constructed keeps viewers on the edge of their seats through its masterful use of suspense and manipulation.
The plot builds a layered and engaging psychological thriller by leading the audience through a series of unexpected twists. Hitchcock decided to focus on Marion Crane’s theft at the beginning only to end her storyline mid-film was a unique idea. This plot twist draws us deeper into the disturbing mysteries of the Bates family, particularly Norman’s troubled past and his twisted relationship with his mother, which is gradually revealed in a way that feels both horrifying and hauntingly plausible.
One of the elements that stood out to me was the exceptional use of camera techniques to heighten tension. The high-angle shots, close-ups, and sudden cuts intensify the suspense and leave the viewer feeling tense and engaged. The shower scene is a prime example, where rapid editing and amazing sound design create a visual sense of what is happening without ever showing any explicit violence. Despite this scene being slightly comical with the visual effects it was produced in 1960, since then technology has developed and progressed significant amount.
After all, Psycho is a masterpiece of both narrative and visual craft. After no one having many hopes for the success of the film when the teaser trailer was released but in the end Hitchcock’s storytelling and unique and niche approach towards the thriller is what made this film so amazing. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, horrors or just a fan of suspense Psycho is an essential for you to watch.
