We're delighted to announce Reshape your Realm, an epic competition for 7-14 year olds, inspired by upcoming British film The Kid Who Would Be King, a new fantasy action-adventure from acclaimed writer and director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), in cinemas 15 February.

Get your students to put their literacy skills to use and enter our new creative writing competition to be in with a chance of winning an exclusive preview screening* of the film for your film club or class, courtesy of 20th Century Fox.

The Kid Who Would Be King sees an ordinary 12-year-old boy named Alex face his destiny after he inadvertently stumbles across King Arthur's legendary sword Excalibur in a London building site. Supported by a team of friends, Alex and his new Knights of the Round Table must go up against medieval myths and legends as they crash into the modern world and threaten our very existence. It might be dangerous… but when was saving the world ever easy?

Reshape your Realm Competition

We challenge young people to produce a short piece of writing describing their ideas for what they might do if they found themselves anointed King or Queen for a day. They should think about issues, concerns and problems that they could resolve using their new power, and consider how their decisions might improve the lives of the subjects of their realm. Encourage young people to express themselves as persuasively as possible, and Joe Cornish himself will select the winning entry.

For inspiration, play your students the video at the top of this page, where writer-director Joe Cornish introduces the competition and presents the trailer for his new film. Or, if you prefer, watch our young reporter Ewan tease the details out of Joe in an exclusive interview.

You can also use our 3Cs and 3Ss literacy tool to analyse the trailer in more detail and to help your students think about how character, colour, camera and story, settings and sounds are presented in the trailer. They can then use this analysis as a prompt to improve their descriptive writing.
