This resource is designed to introduce young people to the art of reviewing and develop their critical thinking and literacy skills. The Creating Effective Film Reviews PowerPoint presentation can be used as a standalone literacy lesson or to accompany a film screening in a school setting or at a larger cinema event, for example, the Into Film Festival.

This is a detailed lesson that introduces learners to the concept of film reviews and guides them through creating their own.

This guide offers flexible approaches to reviewing films and is designed for classroom use or film club sessions. It will work with any film and can be easily adapted to suit your group and available time. The activity sheets that accompany the PowerPoint provide activities for learners to complete before, during and after watching the chosen film. They can be used in conjunction with the lesson but also function as standalone resources.

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"Film is totally part of the curriculum throughout all subjects, at both Key Stages 3 and 4. We couldn't teach here without film!"
