What would happen if one day the animals on a farm decided that being milked, over-fed and eventually sent to slaughter didn't really suit them? What if they got rid of the farmer? That is what happens in George Orwell's famous book, from which this smart film is adapted using a mix of real animals, puppets and CGI animation. Orwell wrote the story as a reaction to what had been happening in Russia under Stalin, but you can still get into the story if you don't know much about that period of history.

Film title

Animal Farm

Synopsis

After the owner fails to make payments to the bank in time, Manor Farm is repossessed and sold to a ruthless billionaire who intends to slaughter the animals. Though they initially don’t realise this is the fate which awaits them, a female pig named Snowball makes the discovery and warns the others. They decide to rebel against their human owners and, after successfully doing so, take control of the farm themselves. Snowball and Napoleon, a laidback boar, become the joint leaders and devise a set of laws to promote harmony and prevent them from ever ruling like the humans did. Most importantly: ‘all animals are equal’. But after Snowball and Napoleon disagree on how to run the farm in the best way for all animals, a leadership struggle emerges and one of them is banished, resulting in a society where some animals receive preferential treatment over others. Adapted from George Orwell’s hugely influential text, this is a more modern interpretation of ‘Animal Farm’ aimed at engaging younger audiences with its story and themes.
