This prequel to The Hunger Games takes place twenty-four years before Katniss Everdeen walked into the arena, unveiling the story of her mentor's own victory. To mark the 50th Hunger Games, Panem is ‘treated' to a special Quarter Quell that demands twice the usual number of tributes. In District 12, a teenage Haymitch Abernathy is hoping to spend his birthday with his family and his girlfriend, but his name is drawn to compete in the infamous games. After being taken to the Capitol, he and fellow tributes are released in an idyllic yet deadly landscape where their fighting will provide entertainment for Panem's wealthy audiences. Haymitch must quickly decide who to trust and how far he will go to survive, yet his refusal to accept the Capitol's version of events also proves dangerous. Based on Suzanne Collins's young adult dystopian novels, this gripping adaptation further expands the franchise, exploring topics including propaganda, inequality and bravery.
