This is a fascinating adaptation of Jane Austen's novel partly because of how very different it is to the book. The book and its central character Fanny Price have often been harshly treated by critics for its supposed lack of engagement with the subject of slavery and Fanny's general timidity, but in the film slavery is tackled directly and, perhaps more interestingly still, Fanny is transformed so that she, as a writer, closely resembles Austen herself.
Contains moderate sex and images of sexual violence
