Canada, 1954. Teenager Ralph is busy dreaming about girls, but the priests who teach at his school think there are better uses of his energy and get him doing cross-country runs. And then Ralph himself becomes convinced that if he can run the Boston Marathon, it will trigger his mother's miraculous recovery from a coma. Although this is essentially an against-the-odds tale, it has many more funny moments than you normally find in this kind of film.
British director Tony Richardson's hard-hitting coming of age tale stars Tom Courtenay as a working class kid whose athletic talent sets him apart.
