Synopsis

Taking place over a period of ten years during the late 1980s and 1990s, this film tells the story of Laurence, a university lecturer with an overwhelming desire to live as a transgender woman. Over time both Laurence and his long-term girlfriend Frederique are forced to confront the bigotry of society, their own personal struggles, rejection from their friends and family and discrimination in their employment, testing their relationship to the limit. Vast, operatic and occasionally rambling, this is a hugely powerful story dealt with in a moving but never condescending way and is an accessible introduction to a topic still largely taboo in more mainstream cinema. With a fabulous 1980s soundtrack.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
