Halfway into their five-year mission – and with some senior members of the crew starting to feel disaffected – the USS Enterprise finds itself under attack from a group of unknown aliens. Forced to abandon ship, Kirk, Spock and co are separated and left stranded on a mysterious planet with no prospect of rescue. Their situation becomes graver still when a dastardly new villain comes into conflict with them. With a commitment to multiculturalism and diversity in its characters and narrative, the franchise continues its quest to reinvent the long-running saga for a modern audience. Amidst all the science, action and humour is a heartfelt poignancy, due to events in the real world as well as the Star Trek universe.
