In the near future, the first mission to colonize Mars is complicated when one of the astronauts discovers she is pregnant soon after take-off. She decides to have the baby, but dies in child birth. After discussion about whether or not the baby could survive on Earth the decision is taken to keep the child in space (and a secret from the world), with scientists raising him on Mars. 16 years later, the precocious Gardner is curious about Earth, not least the girl he has sparked a friendship with online. When he finally gets the chance to visit he tries to find her, along with the father he has never known, experiencing the wonders of a planet he has only read about.
