What is an Into Film Club?

Synopsis

When Catrin Cole arrives to interview for a secretarial post at the Ministry of Information, she finds herself unexpectedly assigned to the scriptwriting department, responsible for writing women’s dialogue, or ‘slop’, for propaganda films. With her ear for recreating convincing speech, Catrin soon makes an impression and is assigned to a feature film project to encourage American intervention in the war effort. Tasked with influencing audiences and raising spirits, Catrin is empowered by her new role despite the reductive tendencies of her male colleagues. Inspired by the female scriptwriters who came into their own during the war, this poignant comedy captures the collaborative and creative spirit of filmmaking under fire.

Watch Their Finest feature on Into Film+ and discover two archive films that we have added before and after the feature: A Call for Arms! is a short film from 1940 originally intended to inspire women in Britain to take up jobs to help the war effort during World War Two. Then after the film we have a humourus advert released after World War Two to encourage the public to volunteer in farming.
