Synopsis

When her father Richard dies, Alice returns to her home village for the first time in fifteen years. Reunited with her brother Joe – who has been looking after Richard for years, struggling to keep the business going while doing so – the two find it difficult to overcome the distance that has developed between them. When Alice claims legal tenancy of the farm, Joe is dismayed and lets his feelings be known. As tensions mount, shared memories surface and the real reason for Alice’s prolonged absence is revealed. ‘Dark River’ is the third feature film from director Clio Barnard, the latest in a spree of dramas exploring rural Britain and family relationships.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
