With no arrests made months after her daughter’s death and the investigation seemingly at a standstill, grieving mother Mildred Hayes decides to put pressure on the local authorities by erecting three provocative billboards questioning the town sheriff, Chief Willoughby. The stunt initially has the intended effects, causing a stir within the community. But when Chief Willoughby reveals his cancer diagnosis to Mildred, the townspeople and her family plead with her to cease the campaign. Refusing to back down, Mildred stands her ground, causing tensions to reach boiling point with local law enforcement. ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is a darkly comic drama with a winding narrative full of twists and turns, challenging preconceptions around characters and their motivations.
Very strong language, strong violence, sex references.
