Cléo is a hypochondriac pop singer who has two hours to wait for some important medical test results to come back. Following an ominous tarot card reading, she travels around her home city of Paris visiting friends, all of whom fail to provide the emotional support she needs. Eventually, she finds comfort in a stranger, a young soldier walking through the park on leave from the Algerian War. The pair quickly bond, and Cléo begins to look at the world through a less selfish lens as together the pair await her results. Directed by the legendary Agnès Varda, this is an extraordinarily influential and beautiful film, full of the joys and complexities of city life, and the kind of iconic, rich female character that became a feature of so much of the director’s work.
