Coming of Age, Drama
Madeline, a vulnerable and isolated teenager, finds that experimental theatre is a seemingly healthy outlet in which she can navigate her fragile mental state and escape her overbearing mother. When Evangeline, the ambitious director of a prestigious theatre troupe, sees something special in Madeline’s unique worldview, she pushes her to confront her anxieties and fears in the name of art and creates an entire production based on Madeline’s psychological turmoil. As their relationship becomes increasingly more intense, a power struggle ensues between them, blurring the lines between reality and performance. Fronted by a star making turn from newcomer Helena Howard, Madeline’s Madeline is a film which tackles the complexities of mental health, artistic appropriation and how we interpret deeply personal stories.
Both atmospheric and effortlessly authentic, Fish Tank is a note perfect story of an adolescent's struggle in a complex adult world.
