The year is 1947 and Mary Lennox is a recently orphaned girl still grieving the loss of her parents after they suddenly die in India from cholera. Sent to live with her strict uncle, Lord Craven, at his grand estate on the Yorkshire Moors, Mary takes to exploring the massive grounds whilst slowly building relationship with her cousin, Lord Craven’s son Colin, who suffers from a disability which prevents him from walking. As family secrets begin to resurface in Misselthwaite Manor, a robin guides Mary to a mysterious and magical hidden garden and she begins to rediscover her zest for life again. Upon discovering that the garden has healing powers, Mary must find a way to help Colin whilst keeping the garden a secret. The classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett gets a new sparkling adaptation that has the ability to delve into complex emotional ideas of family and ethics whilst maintaining the fantastical nature of an entertaining children’s film.
