Synopsis

This Australian comedy follows 17-year-old Ellie’s coming out journey. Bookish and the school captain, Ellie is hilariously awkward and obsessed with Abbie, her longstanding crush. When she makes the decision to come out to her mother and ask Abbie to their high school’s dance, Ellie is visited by her queer aunt Tara, who died in the 80s but has come back to help her navigate life as a young lesbian. The film explores Ellie and Abbie’s blossoming romance alongside the intergenerational connection shared between Tara and Ellie, as well as the tensions and misunderstandings that arise from their age and cultural differences. Ellie and Abbie celebrates young queer love alongside the importance of family and what can be learned from openly discussing personal histories.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
