Adapted from a novel that was inspired by real events, this surreal story presents an allegorical stage for the #MeToo movement. In a quaint setting of horse-drawn carts and haylofts, a religious community of Mennonites lives isolated from society. But this seemingly chaste and simple life has recently been turned upside down by a series of mysterious nighttime attacks on girls and women – and by the horrible discovery that the perpetrators are their own menfolk. A group of women thus gathers in council, to address the trauma that they have been through and decide what is to be done. Should they forgive the men, as their faith would instruct? Or should they abandon the seclusion of their village and start anew? Through the highly compelling and contrasting performances of the assembled women, this powerful drama articulately presents a pertinent moral debate on women’s rights, religion and justice.
