Synopsis

A film’s soundtrack, and especially its score – music that has been especially written to accompany a film – has the power to stir up great emotional responses in audiences. It can powerfully shape the characters and the story on screen and become one of the most memorable aspects of the movie-going experience. What would Star Wars be without John Williams’ awe-inspiring orchestral theme, or Psycho without Bernard Hermann’s pulsating strings? Using expert and accessible references to many such defining moments in cinema history, this documentary explores the art of composing music for films. It offers an informative and engaging insight into the very process of creating this magic, with clear definitions of film and music terms, behind-the-scenes footage of film composers at work, and candid reflections by some of the masters in the field, such as Hans Zimmer, whose credits include Gladiator, The Lion King and The Dark Knight.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
