Synopsis

The ability of activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to rally a nation during the Civil Rights Movement led him to being viewed as a highly dangerous individual and a person of interest to the FBI. This documentary explores the cultural and political context of the USA at the time, including the pervasive paranoia over communism and how Black identities and the FBI have been depicted, and mythologized, in popular culture and the collective imagination. Using restored footage and previously classified documents from the National Archives, the extent to which the FBI went to try and discredit Martin Luther King, Jr. is revealed. At the heart of this story is an ethical line that challenges our ideals to this day: is exposing details of a public figure's private life a matter of public interest, or can society be willingly blinded to the bigger picture by those who play dirty?

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
