Synopsis

Sara and Yusra Mardini are two sisters living in Damascus, Syria, juggling regular teenage life with intensive training as professional swimmers, hoping to one day compete in the Olympic Games. But as war breaks out and bombs rain down on the city, Sara and Yusra make the difficult decision to leave their family and travel to Europe as refugees. The journey proves to be incredibly dangerous, and the sisters must draw on all their strength and courage to keep going, even diving into the Mediterranean Sea to save fellow migrants from a sinking boat. But when they finally reach safety, their challenges are not yet over, as sibling drama sparked by their different priorities intensifies. It is then that their individual journeys truly begin, with Yusra’s sights set on the Olympics. Based on a remarkable true story, this dramatic and uplifting portrayal of sport and girlhood rings out with empowerment.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
