Elliot is an assured, free-spirited teenager living in rural Canada who is spending the summer working on her father’s cranberry farm whilst dreaming of escaping and truly “beginning her life”. On her 18th birthday, she and her two friends decide to experiment with psychedelic drugs, a decision that leads Elliot to a fantastical meeting with her 39-year-old future self. After the two Elliots share an emotional night talking under the stars, younger Elliot wakes up to find a phone number in her phone that allows her to keep communicating with her future self. However, the one piece of advice that she does not expect is to stay away from a boy called “Chad” – right when Chad walks into Elliot’s life. This coming-of-age comedy has a heart of gold and smartly addresses subjects such as understanding sexuality, planning for the future and living for the moment without speaking down to its audience.
