Synopsis

Deep in the mountains of Laos, Southeast Asia, a boy called Satu works to earn his keep at the Buddhist temple where he was abandoned as a baby. When a recent climate-change-induced flood exposes thousands of unexploded American bombs, threatening his temple and village, Satu is left at a crossroads in his life. Meanwhile, Bo, an eighteen-year-old aspiring photojournalist, flees an abusive home to find a story for her university application when her moped breaks down in the countryside, leading her to Satu’s temple. They become friends and set off to find Satu’s long-lost mother, with Bo documenting their journey and Satu’s pet rabbit in tow. They embark into a world of peril and discovery, their quest becoming one of friendship and resilience. With their own pasts still troubling them, can their journey bring hope to a village haunted by war? The theme of photojournalism is matched with beautiful cinematography and nature in this tender road movie.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
