Synopsis

In the Pacific Ocean lies a small island whose local population’s sporting spirit has inspired a documentary and now this fiction feature - but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect. Following their spectacular 31-0 loss against Australia, the American Samoa football team doesn't know which way to turn. Luckily for them, nor does the unorthodox Dutch coach Thomas Rongen, who has been unceremoniously booted out of his club. The American Soccer Federation now sets him the seemingly impossible task of transforming the ‘world's worst football team' into a competitive and confident set of players. Bad tempered and bitter, Rongen struggles at first to connect with the team, clashing with its star player Jaiyah, who is transgender. But the coach and the islanders' transformative journey turns out to be one of empathy and of human spirit, in a hilarious and uplifting celebration of diversity and the universal power of sport.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
