Introverted Doe, a devout Muslim, and the dynamic, brash Muna are two high-school best friends whose troubled lives in London leave them disillusioned with life in the UK. Doe’s Somalian heritage and Muna’s Pakistani background has led to bullying and racism from their fellow students whilst their home lives are fraught with aggression and violence from their families. In search of acceptance and freedom, they make the decision to abandon their situation and run away to Syria, a more fundamentalist Muslim country where Doe’s boyfriend is supposedly waiting for them. Landing in Turkey and cutting ties with their families, the friends plan to travel across the border with as little interruption as possible – but soon find that a fresh start may not be as easy or accessible as they imagined. A film about the sacred bond of teen friendship and the very human vulnerabilities that lie behind recent real-life news stories.
