Venice, 1947: Hercule Poirot is retired, and has lost his faith in both God and humanity. On the night of Halloween, mystery writer Ariadne Oliver – an old friend of Poirot’s – convinces him to attend a séance at the palazzo of opera singer Rowena Drake. She wants Poirot there to expose the medium conducting the séance, Joyce Reynolds, as a fraud. It is being held by Rowena in order to contact her daughter Alicia, thought to have taken her own life after her fiancé broke off their engagement. After one of the guests is murdered, Poirot must use his trusty instincts to uncover the culprit. But when spooky and unexplained phenomena begin to occur, even the great detective becomes mystified over what is at play. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel ‘Hallwe’en Party’, Branagh’s third outing in his Poirot series sees a more horror-inflected story than the previous instalments.
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must cut his holiday short and investigate when a murder occurs aboard a glamorous riverboat steamer in Egypt.
