This quick-fire dramedy follows Leila, a young Iranian American filmmaker who has long felt caught between two cultures, constantly battling the might of her strong-willed mother, Shireen, who desires a more reserved life for her daughter. Leila’s life gets unimaginably complicated when she finds out that she has become pregnant after a one-night stand with a colleague whilst, at the same time, a family medical situation pulls her back home. Old familial tensions begin to flare up but, whilst spending time with her grandmother, Leila uncovers revelations about her mother’s past in Iran that shifts her understanding of both her mother and herself. Told in dual, stylised timelines, this is a compelling and entertaining semi-autobiographical film about the intertwining of culture and self-identity with a focus on empathy and second-generation experiences.
