Synopsis
In 1976, charismatic film producer Frank Shepard hosts an opening night party for his new movie with a raft of Hollywood insiders invited, alongside the star – and also his mistress – Meg. As the attendees praise him, the mood suddenly turns tense when a partygoer mentions Charley Kringas, Frank’s former best friend and musical collaborator. Frank’s oldest remaining friend, theatre critic Mary Flynn, is present but is repulsed by the shallowness of Frank’s new entourage, and is dismayed that he’s abandoned music, his true talent. After Frank’s wife arrives and confronts him, and Mary tells the other guests exactly what she thinks of them, the story continues in reverse order – through the major events in the lives of Frank, Mary, and Charley over the previous two decades – to show how they ended up in their present situation. ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ is an acclaimed filmed version of stage supremo Stephen Sondheim’s much-loved piece of musical theatre.
