Rick Power is a past-his-prime wedding singer living in Dublin who still believes he can make it as a big-time musician if he can just write one hit song. During one of his gigs, he meets and sings with Danny Wilson – a former boy band star who is attempting to go solo – after the bride requests that they duet. After the wedding, Rick and Danny have some drinks and jam together, sharing ideas for potential hits, including a work-in-progress song of Rick’s called ‘How to Write a Song Without You’. After Danny returns to Los Angeles and is told by his manager that his ideas are generic and won’t sell, he plays Rick’s song for his girlfriend without telling her the truth of where it came from, and she encourages him to release it. When Rick hears the song playing in Ireland six months later, he realises that he has been betrayed and seeks to track down Danny for answers. ‘Power Ballad’ is an entertaining and moving drama about the music industry, finding inspiration, and the ethics around intellectual property.
